RECLAIM NEW YORK INITIATIVE RESPONDS TO BASELESS ATTACKS FROM ULSTER COUNTY EXECUTIVE MIKE HEIN

Statement from Reclaim New York Initiative Executive Director Brandon Muir:

“Ulster County lawmakers have the opportunity to pass legislation that would level the playing field between citizens and entrenched politicians. Establishing term limits is an important reform supported by Reclaim New York Initiative and 80 percent of New Yorkers. But County Executive Mike Hein has distracted citizens from a substantive policy conversation by issuing a hyper-partisan statement riddled with blatant inaccuracies about Reclaim’s founding and mission.

“The County Executive is doing a disservice to Ulster County residents by prioritizing political agendas, hateful lies, and conspiracy theories over facts. Framing Reclaim New York Initiative in such vile terms without a shred of evidence is insulting not only to the organization but to anyone who has been the victim of real bigotry.  His baseless claims don’t become true just because he and other extremists so frequently parrot them.

“Referencing a former Reclaim board member is meant to avoid an honest discussion on a proposal that would restore a system of government run by citizen-legislators, not career politicians. Resorting to scare tactics to detract from common-sense reforms isn’t just wrong, it’s pathetic.

“Above all, Hein’s statement is hypocritical. He references working together with all sides while simultaneously attempting to silence an organization that partners with Ulster residents on all sides of the aisle fighting against a broken status quo.”
