Albany’s New Tax System Options Aren’t Taxpayer Protection, They’re Taxpayer Assault
Reclaim New York Initiative offered the following statement today on the new tax system options included in the Department of Taxation and Finance’s “Preliminary Report on the Federal Tax Cuts and Jobs Act”:
“After a month of Albany melting down over federal tax reform, this is what we get? This is a list of risky proposals that would make taxes more complex, reduce wages, increase costs for businesses, and some may amount to tax evasion.
“These options aren’t taxpayer protection, they’re taxpayer assault.
“If Albany tries to make this taxpayer nightmare a reality, it shows they will stop at nothing to pass blame to Washington for their years of failed tax policies. They’d rather create a more complex, costly state tax system than make no-brainer reductions to massive, ineffective spending like economic development programs. Unfunded mandate reform for downstate taxpayers licking their SALT wounds continues to be overdue.
It’s a slap in the face to hard-working New Yorkers, who will continue to flee the state.”
