Illegal fees are – you guessed it – illegal. And Suffolk County’s proposed 2018 budget relies on millions of dollars in illegal fees to pay for the county’s reckless spending.

While the Suffolk County Executive didn’t propose new fee increases for 2018, there are still illegal fees built-in from years of county politicians abusing fees to try to patch the budget.

This is a vain attempt to try to cover up for failed leadership in county government, and it doesn’t even work. Fee revenues fail to live up to estimates time and time again.

Suffolk County residents should say enough is enough. It’s time to end illegal fees and pursue serious spending reform that gets the budget under control.

Here’s what you need to know:

  1. Under New York State law, fees for services must reasonably relate to the cost of providing the service. Fees used to generate revenue or to offset the cost of general government functions are considered unauthorized taxes. They’re illegal.
  1. Suffolk County’s $500-plus mortgage fee is a particularly blatant revenue grab. Residents get nailed with the illegal fee every time they open, refinance, or satisfy a mortgage. According to state law, this fee should only be approximately $10.
  1. While Suffolk’s budget has no increase in the general tax rate, no increases in fees, and a reduction in the county’s structural deficit, it’s marred by major spending increases, a tax increase for police districts, and a reliance on revenue from unauthorized fees.

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Call and email your county legislator and tell them you support ending illegal fees in Suffolk County. Find your legislator here.
